Performing Arts

Over the past 25 years, Daniel P. Coffey & Associates, Ltd., the 2003 AIA Chicago Architecture Firm of the Year, has developed a reputation for high quality, innovative work in a variety of complex and diverse areas of architecture and design. These often include projects for commercial and not-for-profit Performing Arts groups. This is perhaps one of the most complex building types as the use is quite demanding of our understanding of auditory, visual and communal senses.  Strong understanding of sound and acoustics, color and light, and their mutual impact on the sensibility of a crowd is essential to success.

We have worked on variously sized projects that have housed all of the performing arts – music, dance, drama and film of all types. We concentrate on maximizing the energy and intimacy of the overall experience while the art is performed. The audience experience from arrival at the lobby…. to seating in the auditorium…to intermission break…. to exit after the performance should be appropriate and exciting. Likewise the artist and the equipment and sets require comfortable, properly sized backstage spaces and all the advanced lighting, rigging and sound technologies to be efficiently arranged.  We concentrate on functional and construction efficiencies too squeeze maximum value for this often expensive building type.
