Erie Pennsylvania Activity District

Daniel P. Coffey & Associates, Ltd. has been involved in several capacities on various assignments since 1994 with the Erie County Convention Center Authority. These have recently included the Master Planning of a multi-venue Performing Arts and Sports Entertainment “Activity” District. This assignment grew out of initial master planning for the Warner Theater and multiple subsequent restoration and improvement phases.

The proposed “Activity District” uniquely combines Arts and Sports as co-anchors to an audience driven district.  It takes advantage of the Warner and the nearby Tullio Civic Center Arena that has minor league hockey and basketball programming and the Jerry Uht Minor League Ball Park.

Via the demolition of a parking deck located between them, a newly created public open space can be created that links these together in a comfortable “piazza-like” way. The Plan proposes to also move into the district, the Erie Playhouse—one of the nations oldest community theaters. It will move to a newly designed 800-seat facility that will contain support facilities for set building and rehearsal for the Symphony, Ballet and Playhouse arts companies. Restaurant, retail and parking would also be a part of the playhouse complex. The concept is an innovative City Planning effort oriented toward bringing people back to downtown Erie on evenings and weekends.
