University of Illinois Campus Core

Daniel P. Coffey and Associates Ltd. was retained to re-conceive the seriously deteriorated “Brutalist” 1960’s “instant” Campus that was often noted to be the worst public environment in Chicago. The process involved a series of campus wide workshops that discussed all deficiencies in the campus environment at all levels of the campus population. Students, Neighbors, Administrators, Deans, Academics and the University Board among others were involved in these workshops

A dramatic change in the philosophy of the original campus was then proposed. A return to the ground and introduction of landscape and a variety of people oriented spaces and paths were proposed. Major demolition and significant modification lessened the originally excessive and oppressive concrete image of the campus as it repaired its deterioration and leaking condition.

The highly applauded transformation is credited with projecting a campus wide revitalization that has greatly improved faculty recruiting, applications, student entrance test levels, acceptance yield, retention thru graduation and other marks of campus academic health and improvement.
