State Street Vision Plan

The State Street Vision Plan was principally developed by Daniel P. Coffey & Associates, Ltd., the State Street Council and the City of Chicago. It called for elimination of a drab transit mall, and introduction of new streetscape. It also called for the return of automobile traffic, historic light fixtures and the introduction of landscaped planters and trees onto the street. Its most important planning innovation was the creation of a new primary use plan for the once dynamic retail mile. This was a radical change in the concept for this world famous retail street. ‘One street - Three Districts’. Thereafter, the firm has worked to bring this plan to fruition with many successful and innovative projects in each district. These three districts each called for significant concentrations of like uses into university/educational, retail and theater sub districts.
