State / Randolph Subway Station

The State and Randolph red line subway station was the second utilization (of seven) of the State Street Subway design theme developed by COFFEY GROUP ARCHITECTURE, LLC* and modifies it slightly to accommodate special aspects of this station such as its direct connection to the Macy’s store above and the Block 37 Development. The primary material utilized in the station—a 6x6 ceramic block—completely reimages the station environment by focusing on color, light, patron movement and flow. All surfaces of the stations’ platforms, fare collection mezzanines and stair/escalator links were studied. Integral was creating a sense of place underground to help the transit user recognize where in the city s/he is - a skyline mural created from the 6x6 ceramic blocks indicate a sense of placement within downtown. The graphic pattern says the city center and this station is at the heart of that city. Specially commissioned artwork is set within the 6x6 grid of decorative tile depicts the street above.
