Fort Myers City &
County Government Center

This multi-building mixed-use project integrated commercial uses into a city and county government center. The Design emphasizes interior and exterior civic spaces that link together the government administrative offices, council chambers, courtrooms, commercial office space, retail space, County Library and parking. The project created open spaces and pathways that link the adjacent Landmark County Courthouse Square to the evolving downtown river front park system.

Specific design elements were intended to symbolize and identify important elements of the program. These include the ‘gold domed’ city council chambers with glassy exterior walls that emphasize the openness of the city’s government structure. The glass covered atrium rotunda was designed to be the interior gathering point for government workers and their constituents similar the great domed halls of state and federal capitol buildings.

The extension of a grand ‘Greenway’ built upon a vacated street was the primary exterior linking space. It would serve as a central gathering place and sculpture garden for the town and an entry court to County Library. A reflecting pool and fountain provide a cooler public exterior space and relief from Florida’s extreme summer temperatures.
